Psalm 23:4

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

The valley is real and dark, yet the presence of the Shepherd removes the ultimate power of fear. The rod and staff, tools of protection and guidance, become sources of comfort. Depression can feel like an unending valley; this psalm insists that the valley is a place of passage, not residence, and that the Shepherd walks it with His people.
