Proverbs 1:8-9

"Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck."

Both father and mother are sources of instruction that beautify and protect the child's life. The imagery of a garland and chain presents parental teaching as something valuable and honorable. Parents are encouraged to keep offering wise instruction, trusting that it can become a lasting adornment even if it is resisted for a time.
